The dilution

Witch hazel, vegetable glycerin and distilled water, mixed to one fixed ratio. The exact recipe behind every tone in the course.

Four tones, by percentage

Four set percentages of ink, plus pure black. Percentages instead of drops, so the size of your caps stops mattering.

The pendulum

The needle touches and lifts, forward and back. Double the passes, and no mark where it turns around.

The X technique

Shade one direction, then cross it in the opposite one. What removes the needle texture and leaves the shadow homogeneous.

Let the skin calm

Bleeding skin pushes pigment back out. Why the second pass, on rested skin, is the one that heals saturated.

The puzzle method

Build a large background piece by piece, each with a soft opening, instead of fighting skin tension with a 49 magnum.
